5 dead in Colorado nightclub shooting

Ashooter opened fire in a nightclub late Saturday, killing five people and wounding 18 in the latest mass shooting to befall the country.

Lt. Pamela Castro of the Colorado Springs Police Department said police received a report of a shooting at Club Q at 11:57pm.

Castro said there was one suspect who was injured and was being treated.

Club Q is a gay and lesbian nightclub that features a ‘Drag Diva Drag Show’ on Saturdays, according to its website.

In addition to the drag show publicised on the website, Club Q’s Facebook page said the night’s planned entertainm­ent included a “punk and alternativ­e show” preceding a birthday dance party, with an “all ages brunch” scheduled to begin at noon yesterday.

“Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” the club posted on Facebook. It said its prayers were with victims and families, and “We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

Colorado Springs is a city of about 480,000 located about 112km south of Denver that is home to the US Air Force Academy.
