General Syed Asim Munir, the country’s 17th army chief, has served as both the chief of Military Intelligence and the premier intelligence agency, InterServices Intelligence.
Until recently, he served as the quartermaster general at General Headquarters. He has commanded the 23 Frontier Force Regiment and Force Command Northern Areas and the XXX Corps in Gujranwala. He has received the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the country’s second-highest award. He is also a Hafiz-eQuran, or someone who has memorised the Quran.
He is the first army chief awarded the sword of honour. Munir’s four-year tenure as lieutenant general was set to end on November 27, but he will now serve three more years as army chief.
