The President and Vice President yesterday led tributes to Emirati soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation on the occasion of Commemoration Day, marked annually on November 30.
“On Commemoration Day, the nation remembers with pride and gratitude its brave sons and daughters who gave their lives while protecting the UAE. The names of our fallen heroes are written in history and we pray that God grants them eternal rest and brings peace to their families,” President His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan tweeted.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, also took to his twitter account, honouring the nation’s fallen heroes.
“Today, the UAE observes a one-minute silence in honour of the souls of its heroic martyrs. All sacrifices are nothing compared to the sacrifices of martyrs. All mothers salute the mothers of martyrs,” Shaikh Mohammad stated in his tweet.
“Martyrs are not dead, but rather they are alive with their Lord, receiving sustenance. Martyrs will remain immortal in the hearts of the UAE people,” the Vice-President added.
Special message
Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, sent a message of pride and gratitude to the mothers and families of martyrs.
“I salute you, mothers of martyrs, whose sacrifices show your great attributes and sincere patriotism. You are an honourable example for us and all other mothers to follow. Your sons lost their lives in the battlefields while defending their nation. Their memory will remain forever in our hearts and their names will always be remembered and engraved in our country’s history,” Sheikha Fatima said.
Lieutenant General Hamad Mohammad Thani Al Rumaithi, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, participated in a prayer for the souls of Emirati martyrs at the Ministry of Defence.
Lt Gen Al Rumaithi was joined by Mattar Salem Ali Al Dhaheri, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, in addition to a number of the Ministry’s military and civilian personnel.
Across the UAE, a minute of silence was observed at 11.30am at government departments in respect of the martyrs. Then the UAE flag was raised.
The annual remembrance day, begun in 2015, was previously known as Martyr’s Day. The ceremony starts on November 30 at 8am with the UAE flag lowered to half mast.
