Unless you are a top fashion designer, a catwalk queen, a pop superstar or part of Hollywood’s elite, you can forget an invitation to New York’s most exciting night of the year. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute beneit is held annually on the irst Monday of May to raise money for the Costume Institute, or the fashion department.

The black-tie extravaganza, which is also known as the Oscars of the East Coast, is known for its outlandish themes and risqué outits.

Hosted by editor-in-chief of Vogue Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney, this year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies.

Leading the way on the red carpet, Rihanna dazzled in a jewelencrusted cream gown layered beneath a lowing overcoat by Maison Margiela. She topped off the look with a large headpiece. Blake Lively looked stunning in a maroon Versace gown which apparently needed its own bus to transport it to the event because of its large train. The embroidered bodice alone reportedly took 600 hours to make.

Supermodel sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid turned heads in their two very different gowns. Bella went for an all black villainesque custom dress by Chrome Hearts complete with elbow length gloves and a train. Gigi on the other hand went for a softer look in a beautiful blue and nude Versace gown that seemed to be inspired by stained glass windows. Gigi had hinted that she would be wearing Versace before the gala after she posted a note she had received from Donatella on Instagram.

In other news this week, turn to our Home pages to read about virtual reality in plastic surgery. The simulation software will allow patients to see what they will look like before actually going under the knife. Doctors believe that this approach will lessen stress and doubt for patients who are considering a procedure.
