Pushing the boundaries

Last year’s Grammy awards were criticised for not having enough females in the mix of nominees and winners. This year however, this is an improvement on that situation even though it is a small one. This week we are taking a close look at the 2019 Grammy award nominations and the genres which dominate them.

Kendrick Lamar has once again shown his popularity with the Recording Academy by leading the Grammy nominees for the second time in his musical career. Lamar has been nominated for eight awards including the top three categories of record, album and song of the year. Back in 2016, Lamar led with 11 nominations.

Brandi Carlile is nominated for six awards for her album By the Way, I Forgive You. After quietly putting out albums since 2005 and being nominated once back in 2015, Brandi is reportedly in shock about being up for six this time making her the most nominated female artist. Apparently Barack Obama is a big fan of the folk singer.

On the other hand, singers like Taylor Swift, who had this year’s bestselling album according to Billboard, received just one nomination for pop vocal album. The Grammy awards will take place on Feb.10 in Los Angeles.
