Rescuing DC

- SARAH TARYAM

The DC universe has been struggling over the past few years with bad reviews and box office bombs. However, Aquaman and Wonder Woman were positively received by critics and audiences alike. This week we are looking at whether or not popular characters like Harley Quinn and Aquaman can save the DC universe and bring it back to life.

Since it was created back in 2013, drawing on 84 years of DC comic book history, the DCEU has not done well at all. Combining iconic superheroes such as Batman and the Flash has not worked with critics claiming DCEU lacks vision and clarity compared to its rival Marvel.

The recently released Aquaman by director James Wan has so far been well received worldwide. Jason Momoa revives his role as Aquaman as he battles with his half brother Orm, King of the underwater kingdom Atlantic. The film has had good reviews and has topped the box office in North America.

Looking back, Wonder Woman was a step in the right direction for DC with critical acclaim and excellent ticket sales. Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins directed. There will, no doubt, be high hopes pinned on the sequel which is due out in 2020.
