What is your advice for young designers?
L: I think that in life you need to have fun in everything you do, so I want everyone to be happy with their work, and I want them to be wrong – so they’ll be stronger afterwards.
What’s your secret to maintaining quality across your projects?
L+R: We care deeply about everything that is related to creativity. Our studio consists of two founding members, a man and a woman, a magma that mixes with another magma, and that always generates additions and disagreements, breaks and order. This law applies to everything we work on.
How do you define Italian design in the 21st century?
L: The design of the 21st century can be defined as chaotic, since design is the mirror of society and the society is broken. From art to literature, from filmography to architecture, everything became chaos; there are no stylistic currents, there is no order. R: It’s weak, because it has not been able to rediscover the ability to renew itself; I do not see the desire forinnovation; it is a weak reality, closed on itself!
What are your thoughts about architecture and design in the UAE?
L: I believe that in the Emirates there is really a disruptive force. It’s a country that is moving in an exceptional way, combining emotion and function and respect for the environment. Not to mention the beautiful museums and mosques that are being built. I think the id Design Awards are a good way of communicating what happens in this part of the world. At the same time, it is also very important because it helps promote commerce and brands. R: I believe that the UAE is a great opportunity for the world! It’s a great inspiration for thinking about how to accelerate modernity in the world. I took part in these awards because I believe that the Emirates could be a leading country for creativity.
What role does design have around social and environmental issues?
L: I believe there are no longer fixed roles and I believe that very few people have noticed it. Institutions want to keep caging our freedom, but it is no longer possible to do it; there will always be communication systems, but they will no longer be those of the past. R: I think that everything that is not born on the trees must be designed.
