Up close and personal
Encouraging upskilling: In our organisation, we identified a gap in skillset between those who are tech-savvy and those who run traditional functions. So, we invested in recruiting young people to plug the gap. We also invested in classroom and online trainings. We created a ‘buddy’ programme to let the tech-forward people train colleagues and help them embrace change. We did not want anyone to fall behind and eventually leave the organisation. We have, therein, created a collaborative environment.
Career enhancement advice: I don’t believe in shortcuts; I believe in hard work. Nothing comes easy and challenges – of different kinds – will always be there. But the idea is to keep going, instead of quitting. I also strongly believe in dreaming big, inculcating self-discipline and sharpening our own capabilities to make those dreams come true.
Message to the retail community: People are already vulnerable due to the fear of the virus and its impact on business and economies. Instead of neglecting, isolating or threatening them, we must protect them. As leaders, we need to be brave, walk the talk and stand together with our people. Importantly, we must treat people with compassion, dignity and fairness. Our people have helped us to come this far; today, standing with them is not a choice – it is our responsibility.
