DJ Booth: Opolopo
An international DJ and producer, we caught up with the Mercury Lounge resident at the Four Seasons Hotel to talk beards, Dolly Parton and House of Cards…
One thing you might not know about me is... I don’t dye my beard. My worst ever job was… Having to explain why requesting Dolly Parton in the middle of my house set was a bad idea. My favorite ever record is... It’s impossible to pick, but Herbie Hancock’s Thrust album is a contender for the top ten.
DJing is much like... Riding a bicycle - it might be safer doing it wearing a helmet but you’ll feel like a tool. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Yet to be explored as I’m playing 5 nights per week. I’m really impressed by all the great DJs coming through here though and wish I had more time to go see them! I’m really proud of... My sister who has made an amazing personal journey.
What track could you drop in every set? My dub remix of Crusaders’ ‘ Street Life’ seem to work in most situations. I can’t live without... Chocolate and earplugs. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.. Being the first ever resident DJ at a Four Seasons hotel.
What is your guiltiest pleasure? Since I got to Dubai it’s the chocolate fudge cake at the Second Cup cafés. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... The 90s... as in 2090. I’m too curious about the future. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... I’d go back in time for this one and play with Larry Levan I’m not a politician but… I love House of Cards.
