Rain, driver oversight ‘caused deadly accident’

- Staff Reporter

abu dhabi — An Asian driver has been remanded to police custody till he stands trial before the Misdemeanors Court for allegedly running over a 10-yearold Arab girl and critically injuring her sister. The accident occurred because the accused failed to stop at a red traffic signal while driving in rainy weather conditions.

The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution also charged the driver with disregarding traffic rules while driving under rainy weather conditions and damaging public property.

Last month, the accused was driving his car from Al Mina area to the Arabian Gulf Street, when he came close to a traffic junction at a speed of 50kmph. The green light started flashing yellow and the driver applied brakes “strongly”.

Due to the accumulated rainwater, and since the driver failed to take precautionary measures, he lost control over the vehicle. The car veered off the road and rammed into the pavement. The car turned turtle, knocking down the two victims, who had been standing at the junction to cross at a zebra crossing.

Before the Public Prosecution, the accused confessed to not taking precautions.

An official at the Abu Dhabi Attorney General’s office said the Asian driver was “driving fast”.

The deceased was identified as Gh.M.S, who died because of the multiple open fractures she sustained in her pelvis.
