The PhiliPPines today has one of the fastest growth rates among major economies in East Asia after China and India. In 2014, the country notched a growth of more than 6 per cent, and according to the country’s central banks, it is expected to reach anywhere between 7 per cent to 8 per cent in 2015.

Remittances are an integral part of this growth, and make up about 10 per cent of the country’s GDP. Remittances have been growing at about 7 per cent annually since 2009. According to the World Bank, total remittances in 2014 reached $583 billion out of which the Philippines received $28 billion, thus maintaining its position as a leading remittance receiving country after India and China.

The GCC is also an important part of this remittance flow with nearly three million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) residing in the region. The UAE has close to 700,000 OFWs working in various sectors including hospitals, shops, retail, household and others.
