Routine inspection of tyres can help avoid serious traffic accidents, the police affirmed.

The awareness lecture was recently organised at the Indian Islamic Centre — Abu Dhabi as part of an awareness programme intended to educate the different communities living in the UAE. The aim of the lecture was to reinforce their traffic education in order to reduce avoidable causes of traffic accidents and fatalities.

Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, explained that the traffic awareness programme organised for the benefit of the Indian community is an integral part of the Abu Dhabi Police’s safety strategy to make roads safer. “As a part of the programme, advice and guidance was provided about tyre safety and the dangers of traffic accidents resulting from tyre bursts,” he said.

The lecture was delivered in English and Hindi by Corporal Saleh Al Khaili from the Public Relations Section, and was attended by 300 people.

Colonel Al Ameri called on drivers of light vehicles and trucks and other road users in Abu Dhabi to observe safety requirements.

He also stressed the need to use new and appropriate tyres and to acquaint drivers with the available information printed on the tyres. He also noted the importance of distinguishing between good and bad quality tyres.

The awareness programme included awareness documentary films, and distribution of brochures that showcase the serious traffic accidents that occur due to tyre bursts. Bursts are caused by cracks or damage in the tyres or due to expired tyres, especially due to the high temperatures during the summer that may cause wear and tear.

The lecture also tackled the major causes behind tyre bursts, including low or high air pressure and overloading the vehicle. Moreover, the lecture provided the necessary information that drivers should be aware of before purchasing tyres.

They include the manufacturing date and date of expiry after installation (six months for trucks and two years for light vehicles); the importance of changing an expired tyre; and the proper ways to store tyres.

Drivers should also be aware of how to inspect tyres prior to buying, and to ensure that they have not been affected by heat or humidity — as this increases the danger of a tyre burst and subsequently leads to accidents.
