Trailer previews series’ final entry
A NEW trailer has arrived for the film
is based on the book of the same name, which is the final book in the series by Suzanne Collins. The last book was split into two movies, so the previous film, was released this past November and the new movie will (presumably) conclude the film series.
The movies star Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who lives in a dystopian future and is selected to participate in the Hunger Games, for which one child from each of the districts in her country is chosen. The young people must kill one another until one is left standing and the Games are televised each year.
It will be interesting to see how the newest and last “Games” movie performs at the box office, however. While the devoted readership would have likely made the first movie a hit anyway, the first film in the series, 2012’s
debuted in March of that year, a traditionally quiet month, and became the thirdhighest-grossing movie of the year. The second film,
moved to November and still did well – it grossed slightly more than the first movie – and became the highestgrossing film of 2013. However, it opened in a fairly non-competitive weekend, when the only film it was facing off with was the Vince Vaughn comedy and the only big-name holdovers were the Marvel movie
which came out two weeks before, and the comedy
which opened the weekend before. (“Ender’s Game” came out at the beginning of that month but quickly fizzled.) Disney’s opened a week later, but had gotten out ahead of it.
But when the third Hunger movie,
opened in November 2014, it entered a crowded month in which the Christopher Nolan sci-fi tale and the Disney animated film
had already both been released, two movies with wide appeal.
still did very well, but its domestic gross was the lowest of the series so far. This November is even busier, so
will be facing off with even more competition. The new James Bond movie is debuting two weeks before
and are set to debut the weekend after
All of these are movies that could have a wide appeal, and then the new film, which is guaranteed to be a massive hit, arrives the next month, so will have to gross a lot of money quickly before dominates the marketplace. —
