2 hurt in Sharjah diesel warehouse fire
sharjah — Two workers suffered minor burn injuries during a massive fire, which erupted in a diesel warehouse in Al Sajja industrial area in Sharjah on Friday night.
According to civil defence official, the barrels were seen blown up and smoke engulfed the area due to the windy weather on Friday night.
The blaze destroyed number of warehouses and large number of diesel barrels, which belonged to a diesel company.
He added that firefighters from various fire stations in Sharjah battled for at least four hours to put out the fire, which quickly spread to the warehouses in the premises.
The huge flames resulted in loud and continuous explosions of oil barrels and also destroyed number of vehicles parked inside the premises.
“There were more than 20 barrels of diesel and petrochemical materials, all of which exploded,” an eye witness said.
The police had cordoned off the area immediately after the fire.
The official said that fire spread because of the inflammable petroleum and chemical materials that were stored in the barrels.
The Sharjah Civil Defence was assisted by their counterparts in Dubai and Ajman, as well as Sharjah Municipality and the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority.
The site was expected to be referred to forensic experts to determine the cause of the fire.
