Appleby expects a lot from Tryster

- James Jose

dubai — Godolphin Racing’s trainer Charlie appleby felt that Tryster gave him the best shot at winning on a World Cup night and said that both the horse and jockey William buick are in top form.

Tryster will contest the dubai Turf to be run over nine furlongs at the dubai World Cup at the Meydan Racecourse on Saturday night.

and appleby was buoyed by buick’s confidence in Tryster.

“Sure, this is my best chance as ever to have a winner on World Cup night and i couldn’t have been any happier about his preparations,” appleby said at the Meydan Racecourse on Thursday morning.

“i’ve got no negatives whatsoever. Horse is in great form, jockey is in great form so it is all positives,” he added.

“First, you always want to hear is your jockey with that sort of confidence. On such a night, you need to have confidence and that’s what William (buick) and the horse have got with them, they have one another. William rides him at home plenty and he knows him inside out. but to go into the race obviously, you want them to be confident,” said appleby.

Tryster comes into the race with three wins on the bounce at Chelmsford and two at Meydan, including the Group 1 Jebel Hatta.

“He cannot have a better platform to go into the race than his two starts out here. He improved with every run and his running style was the most exciting part about him. Obviously, we got excited and it posed the question, can he produce that on turf, and quite rightly so. and we took the decision to go to Sandown and it just didn’t materialise that day. We all came away and a lot of people jumped on about that he is not a turf horse because he hasn’t done it.

“but to be fair to the horse, his run style is as we all know is a hold up horse. More importantly, i think, to be fair, he has been on the go during the winter and they are not machines, they need a break. That’s why we didn’t want to try and chance him again on the turf. We decided he needed a summer break and that’s what he had,” he said.

and appleby said the strong field will throw up an exciting race, despite Solow not returning to defend his title. The six-yearold hasn’t recovered fully from a knock which he sustained during a gallop in Chantilly.

“No race is handed to you on a plate on World Cup night, unfortunately. Obviously, it is a great disappointment that Solow didn’t turn up. Hopefully, he can recover from his set back there.”
