dubai — Michael Bell will saddle Big Orange, owned by WJ&T CO Gredley and ridden by Jamie Spencer, in the 11-entry $1 million Dubai Gold Cup on Saturday.

The race on turf over 3,200 metres — the night’s longest race in the nine-card programme — is sponsored by Al Tayer Moors. It starts at 4.55pm.

Big Orange, an young entry, finished fifth in the Melbourne Cup, an event Bells reckons is one great destinations for horses with potential. Newmarket bred Big Orange produced good form there, and Bell considers he is a timely boost.

On his recent winter illness, Bell said: “Yes, we had a few small issues soon after travel but the vets have brought him out clear. He is now fully race fit.

“Right now after a holiday, rest and buildup phases, Big Orange is raring to have a go in a big event where there is big money like the Dubai World Cup. Jamie (Spencer) is going to love riding him and will come to know him even better. The workouts here in the mornings have been great both for the rider and the entry,” Bell added.

“As plans go it is likely we go in for another handicap-based event Down Under, but plans can change as he shows improvement especially on turf in the longer runs. The French entries for the Dubai Gold Cup are formidable but this is what Big Orange, a willing learner always, loves to do and has a proven track record. He is in very good shape, has ears like a donkey and is a timely boost for all of us looking after him,” Bell said.

“The beauty about him is he always enjoys his time whether in training, at the races or when ‘holidaying’. Never does he shy away from the workload put on him no matter what the situation is,” Bell continued, “The solid breeding in England, has seen him take us to Australia and now Dubai.”
