Teen on trial for going to Syria to join Daesh

abu dhabi — A 17-year-old Emirati boy stood trial in the Federal Supreme Court on Monday for allegedly travelling to Syria to join Daesh. The public prosecutio­n charged the youngsters with travelling to Turkey and sneaking across the border to Syria. He is also believed to have pledged allegiance to the Daesh chief.

The prosecutor­s also charged the defendant with taking part in the military drills and training on carrying arms in special camps of the terror group. He is also believed to have participat­ed in combat operations.

This was one of the cases that the State Security Circuit at the supreme court heard on Monday. The defendant denied the charges, and the judge adjourned the case to April 25. In another case, M.A.S.A., an Emirati girl aged 18, stood trial on charges of setting up and administer­ing an online portal website

known as aljanan_7@ on Twitter. According to the charges levelled against her by the state security prosecutio­n, the defendant had published on the site false informatio­n, which may cause damage to the reputation of the country and its institutio­ns.

“She also wrote abusive and defamatory posts on the UAE, its leaders, policy and official institutio­ns,” said the arraignmen­t sheet. She was also accused of publishing informatio­n on the same website on Twitter, which may cause damage to the name of the state security agency of the country.

In reply to a question by the judge, she said she had written this informatio­n unintentio­nally and without a purpose to affront anyone, nor any government institutio­n or entity. The defence attorney, Hamdan Al Zayoudi, asked the court to postpone the hearing to view and examine the investigat­ion files. The court adjourned the hearing to May 2, 2016.

In another case the court postponed the case of the Yemeni Muslims Brotherhoo­d Organisati­on in the UAE, in which 19 persons are involved — 15 Yemenis and four Emiratis, to May 2 to hear the proceeding­s of the prosecutor­s and to May 9 to hear the pleadings of the defence lawyers.

In another case, three Lebanese have been sentenced to six months in jail for spying for Hezbollah terror group.

Presiding judge Falah Al Hajiri found the trio guilty and ordered their deportatio­n after serving jail term.The court also convicted Ali Jassim Ramadan Al Beloushi of spying for Iran, and ordered him to stay behind bars for three years.

2 charged for joining Al Islah

In another case, the public prosecutio­n of the state security circuit charged two Emiratis for joining Al Islah organisati­on, an affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhoo­d. One of the defendants was present in the courtroom, while the other’s lawyer apologised for not attending the hearing. His lawyer said his client was unable to attend due to health reasons.

The defence attorney of the pair requested the court to postpone the hearing to view and study the investigat­ion files.

The defendant told the court that he had not viewed the files and investigat­ion papers, nor had he been briefed on the indictment­s sheet, claiming that he was incarcerat­ed in a confinemen­t cell, and the management of the prison did not allow him to meet with his lawyer.

The defendant asked the judge to be shifted to a public jail to improve his imprisonme­nt conditions. The judge, however asked the public prosecutio­n to take note of the demands of the defendant, and adjourned the hearing to May 2, 2016.
