ras al khaimah — The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court of Appeal has heard a case in which an Asian resident is charged with robbing Dh800,000 from an exchange house at Al Nakheel area.

The defendant had earlier been found guilty of robbery and threatening to kill two exchange house employees. The lower court had sentenced him to five years in jail and deportation thereafter.

As per the prosecution bill of accusation, the suspect, in November 2015, stormed an exchange house at the Nakheel business area and threatened to kill two female staff by pointing a gun at them if they did not cooperate.

The two staff members told the prosecution that they were about to close shop before the Friday sermon when the masked robber attacked them with what turned out to be a plastic toy gun he was holding, and asked them to hand him over all the cash they have in the exchange house.

The suspect robbed Dh800,000 from the exchange house and fled the scene following which the two staffers sounded the alarm bell. The criminal investigation men of the RAK police rushed to the site, and took hold of the suspect who was already caught by two brave Emirati and Pakistani men.

The RAK Criminal Court ordered the suspect to serve five years and prison and be deported after completing the jail term. DIssatisfied with the ruling, the defendant moved to the RAK Criminal Court of Appeal.

Held for sexual abuse

The same court, in another case, started hearing an Asian technician accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl.

As per the bill of accusation, the RAK public prosecution charged the suspect with indecently grop the girl while she was with him.

The case unfolded early this year when the CID of RAK police arrested the defendant, and referred him to the prosecution, following which he stood trial last month at the RAK Criminal Court.

The lower court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to three years in prison, and deportation. The case was moved to the RAK Criminal Court of Appeal where the suspect pleaded not guilty. The court ordered adjournment of the case to next week.
