dubai — Two tourists allegedly tried to commit suicide as the Dubai Police were arresting them over a Dh76,000 robbery, a court heard on Wednesday. The duo assaulted policemen and slit their own wrists as the police placed them under arrest.

The case dates back to December 18, 2015. In the Court of First Instance, the duo admitted to breaking into a flat and robbing jewllery worth over Dh76,000. However, they claimed in court the incident happened during the day.

The two Georgian nationals, aged 23 and 25, have been charged with trespass, forced robbery and damage of others’ property.

The two men will also be tried for resisting four on-duty police officers and attempting suicide.

The complainant, 41-year-old Indian, said he left his flat in Al Hamriya around 4pm and came back three hours later. “I knew there was a burglary when I found the door’s lock broken. My jewellery, worth over Dh76,000, was gone.” He said the thieves also took Dh6,000 in cash and two digital cameras.

A police corporal said they arrested the defendants from the Naif area. “They put up stiff resistance. We searched them and found the stolen jewellery.”

A police sergeant said the men admitted to him to breaking into the complainant’s flat. They split the robbed items between them.

A verdict will be pronounced on April 27. —
