Enlightened consumers make DED’s job easy
Consumers are increasingly aware of their rights nowadays, according to a top official at the Department of Economic Department.
“Today we receive complaints from members of the society that reveal their awareness about the basics for doing business in the emirate,” said Abdul Aziz Al Tanak, Director of the Trade Control Department at DED.
Doing business in Dubai is subject to rules that secure customers’ rights, which contribute to develop an investment-friendly environment that enhances the confidence of consumers in traders and investors.
“We have always endeavoured to educate consumers as well as the merchants to know their rights and preserve the rights of the two parties to stave off disputes,” Al Tanak added. He noted that “there is an evidence of a large segment of the society who is interested in the laws, customs and traditions followed in the emirate.” Al Tanak pointed out that there are consumers who check thoroughly the details of the licence, especially when striking big deals with companies and corporations.
Citing an example of how consumers are well aware of their rights, Al Tanak said: “We have recently received a remark from a consumer saying that he had sus- pected a company which was doing contracting works, but its activity was not stated in the trade licence.
“In our verification, it appeared that the company had no right to practise such activity, and we had taken action accordingly. When we asked the complainant how did he come to know that, he said he had read one of our awareness bulletins on trade activities and licence.
The complainant has found out that the company, which he was about to enter an agreement with to build a house for his son, was unqualified. “Consumer like this prompts us to train new generation towards being well aware of their rights,” he added.
