dubai — Two men, who had been sentenced by a lower court for trying to swindle a businessman, have lost their appeal.

The duo from Cameron had been sentenced to two years in jail for trying to swindle a businessman of large amounts of money by giving him fake $100 bills.

The suspects, aged 33 and 39, were both convicted by the Court of First Instance in June of attempted fraud and possession of fake $427,000, which they intended to circulate.

The court ordered each of them to pay a Dh10,000 fine and to be deported after completing their jail terms.

The appellate court upheld their jail terms and deportation order and also ordered them to pay the fines. The fake bills were confiscated.

The accused, who pretended to the businessman they possessed money which they planned to invest with him, was arrested in Al Muraqqabat on March 22.

After the police verified the authenticity of the information, they coordinated with the informant to arrange to meet the defendants.

“We caught them red-handed trying to swindle him. They offered him $100 bills, tainted with a black substance, which they claimed needed a chemical material to become usable.”

The pair admitted when questioned to the fraud bid charge. “They confessed that they were to charge the informant for the chemical substance and the fees of shipment of the amounts of money from Cameron,” the officer testified.

The Criminal Evidence report showed that the $100 bills seized from the accused were all counterfeit.

The verdict may be challenged at the Court of Cassation.
