Al Ahli’s Olaroiu, Ambar wary of Shabab strength
dubai — Al Ahli presented their views on their Arabian Gulf Cup Group B encounter tomorrow night against neighbours Al Shabab, with coach Cosmin Olaroiu and promising teenager Waleed Ambar saying, Al Shabab are one of the toughest clubs to get past traditionally.
“Be careful of them. We have always had to fight our way through against Shabab who have one of the best organsised all round teams in the UAE. Just look at their last four matches including the convincing win against Kalba a fortnight ago,” said Olaroiu. Al Ahli too had a convincing second round win against powerhouses Al Ain.

Ambar, formerly of Emirates FC and talent scouted by Olaroiu for the new season, said: “I have seen and played against them in the age group competitions before. They are well organised in midfield and on the flanks in the counter raids which they effectively deploy in no time. We have to be wary of this fact.”
Olaroiu said no excuse would be acceptable in the Red Knights’ post match analysis regarding player class or quality.
“People talk about player nonavailability due to national duty like we experienced before our last encounter against Al Ain. More than 90 per cent of our squad were in training together for the centralised camps before the season took off. We have our import regulars and some seasoned club and locally bred players who have the pedigree to stand up to the pressures of the second most important UAE football championship. Opting for certain players for contracts may be a recommendation from our side but the final decision lies with the club’s management who decides on the overall composition.”
Young Ambar, into his late 20s, is one of the many youngsters who have the ability to adjust at the highest level. Considered one of the bright sparks in UAE soccer, the former UAE U19 player is basically a midfielder but he has high utility value as he can play with the same confidence and skill both as an attacker and as a defender.
“I am fortunate to be part of a top UAE outfit like Al Ahli and am honoured to be part of the squad. I am most thankful to our coach and the management for giving me the opportunity,” said Ambar who will be looking forward to at least a substitute’s role, Thursday night, kickoff 8pm at Al Shabab Club near Mamzar, Dubai.
