One-wheeling craze a threat to other motorists

islamabad — Opening of various avenues and expansion of main roads have smothered the traffic flow in the federal capital. However, the situation encourages amateur motorists and motorcycli­sts to exhibit acrobatic stunts especially one-wheeling on roads.

The nuisance caused by these motorcycli­sts can be seen on any busy road particular­ly during night and on weekends.

On occasions like Eid, Independen­ce Day, New Year, Shab-e-Barat, national holidays and on Saturdays, the youngsters are seen one-wheeling in groups.

Although scores of young men have been injured and some even lost their lives in this adventuris­m, the practice continued due to lack of effective checking by traffic authoritie­s • Over 200 youngsters lost their lives to one-wheeling in the past two years. • The practice is commonly witnessed on Eid, Independen­ce Day, New Year night, national holidays and on Saturdays. • To increase the speed limit of and absence of racing tracks in the capital.

To increase the speed limit of a bike motorcycli­sts usually alter parts of their bike and replace some of its genuine parts with fake parts. After alteration­s, a normal bike with a maximum speed limit of 80kmh can go up to 100kmh. a bike, motorcycli­sts alter parts of their bike. > Once altered, a bike can go up to 100kmh against its maximum speed of 80kmh. > Traffic police have so far failed to stop the menace despite making tall claims.

Zafar Iqbal, a resident of Islamabad’s Sector G-7/4, said such motorcycli­sts disturb the peace and tranquilit­y of area by removing silencer of the bike. These bikes and cars, mostly driven by ill-behaved youth, remain on the rampage on weekends, negating the tall claims made by the traffic police.

Aslam, a commuter, said these young drivers not only endanger their own lives but also of others as they not only drive rashly but also violate traffic rules by driving in a zigzag manner instead of staying within their lane. They are often joined by other groups, who also drive recklessly without silencers disturbing the atmosphere of Murree Road, he added.

The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) claimed that all efforts were being made to curb such stunts.

SSP (Traffic) Malik Matloob said that special deployment of police had been ensured at 7th Avenue, 9th Avenue, Margala Road, Jinnah Avenue, Blue Area, Faizabad, Rawal Road, Bhara Kahu to check onewheelin­g and other stunts on weekends. — APP
