dubai — A businessman was arrested in Hor Al Anz, Al Muraqqabat, in possession of heroin weighing more than 4.5kg, the Court of First Instance heard on Monday.

The 42-year-old Pakistani man pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of drugs for selling.

He claimed at the court that he just possessed some boxes and was not aware of what was inside those boxes.

The businessman was arrested on August 29 in a sting operation by the anti-narcotics officers of the Dubai police.

“We received a tip-off from a reliable source that a Pakistani man was indulging in the activity of selling drugs. He was about to sell a quantity to one of our informants,” an anti-narcotics police lieutenant said. “We had a prosecution warrant for search and arrest after the informant and the businessman set a time and place to meet in Hor Al Anz. We went with other officers and followed our informant who drove a civil car that belonged to our department. The informant picked the businessman up in his car and drove to a petrol station. He signalled to us when the other man stepped off his car”.

The accused admitted to the police that he sold a quantity of heroin to the other man and said he had more drugs in his place in the Sharjah Industrial Area.

“He led us to a shop where he worked and stayed. Three boxes, containing plastic bags full with a banned substance, were seized from him,” the lieutenant told the investigators.

He was taken into custody. The trial has been adjourned to December 19.
