Now, work out as you do your shopping

- Saman Haziq

dubai — Most of us have an excuse that “we are too busy to go to the gym” and hence are unable to measure our fitness levels. But how about a gym on the go? Now, technology is being used to keep people fit. The aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle in Dubai. Everyone loves to shop, some out of necessity and others just for fun. So now imagine a shopping cart that will not only help you add groceries to your cart, but will also tell you how many calories you burnt while doing it. A unique “Fit Cart” will soon be available soon across supermarkets in the region that will make it easier for people to measure their fitness levels on the go.

The cart has been launched by Lipton Green Tea and will be soon available across the region.

The “Fit Cart” is enabled with an interactive technology that reads the number of steps and calories burnt while shopping. Connected to the kinetic motion of its wheel revolutions, the shopping cart’s handlebar will display essential fitness information to all shoppers.

Our aim is to raise awareness on the importance of staying active throughout the day.”

“The initiative is based on a strong local insight we found. People are busy in their day-to-day lives... The grocery store is one of the many places where you can make a healthier choice. And through this fit-cart we hope to encourage the people of Dubai to healthier choices,” said Waqas Javed, Marketing Director Refreshments Arabia.

As a next step, Unilever is collaborating with the Dubai Health Authority to instal stationary bikes across the city’s public spaces, including parks, to encourage exercise. “Our aim is to raise awareness on the importance of staying active throughout the day. Our message is that people should keep moving, make healthier decisions and watch their diet,” concluded Javed.
