Jorgensen rocks it against Yun

- James Jose

dubai — With long locks and sporting many a tattoo, Jan O Jorgensen could perhaps be mistaken for a rockstar who turned up at the wrong place.

But then, the Dane is indeed one, but on a badminton court though. He is the world No.1 at the moment and the 28-year-old used Court 1 of the Hamdan Sports Complex to rock the stage on Wednesday.

Twice a semifinalist here, Jorgensen embarked on landing the elusive Dubai BWF World Superseries Finals title with a blink-andyou-miss victory over Hong Kong’s Hu Yun in his Group A opener.

In the last four in 2014 and 2015, Jorgensen saw off Hu Yun 21-8, 21-5 in just 23 minutes. That extended his domination over Hu Yun to 5-1 in head-to-head meetings.

Jorgensen proved to be more than a handful for Hu Yun as the Dane ran up a 15-3 lead in the first game as Yun tried to nick a few points. And eight points was all that Yun could muster as he netted his serve to hand the first game to Jorgensen. The second game was over in 10 minutes.

Jorgensen takes on Germany’s Marc Zwiebler in his second game on Thursday.

Earlier, China’s Tian Houwei got the tournament off to a start by defeating Marc Zwiebler. The third seed got the better of the German fifth seed 21-15, 21-7 in 34 minutes, in the men’s singles Group A fixture on Court 1.

Meanwhile, third seed Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun saw off Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon to get women’s action going. Sung won the Group A fixture 21-19, 21-12 in 35 minutes, also on Court 1.
