Beware risks in China’s economy
China’s economy continues to be a major source of uncertainty for global growth this year. Its 6.7 per cent expansion in 2016 was within the range of Beijing’s target and may appear to be steadily on course to a slower but more stable growth. President Xi Jinping has tried to dispel concerns over the slowing growth by saying the Chinese economy is in a “new normal” driven by household spending. True, the GDP figure was within the government’s target of a 6.5 to 7 per cent growth. Still, the 2016 growth paints an unhealthy picture of the economy.
