Man accused of stalking woman with forged marriage certificate

- Ismail Sebugwaawo

abu dhabi — An Indian woman has accused a compatriot man who claims to be her husband of stalking her and insulting her in public.

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance heard that the man had waited for the woman at her workplace in the Capital during the afternoon.

And when she got out of her office at the end of work, the man came and grabbed her by the hand as she was about to enter a car with a male workmate and friend. The man allegedly pulled the woman and ordered her to follow him. Prosecutors said that the woman tried to resist which made the man to use force to pull her.

As people gathered to intervene and help the woman, the man showed them a photo of a marriage certificate which was in his phone, claiming that the woman was his wife.

She, however, denied being married to the man, stressing that the marriage certificate was a forged one. She then went and filed a complaint with the police.

The police arrested the man and charged him with forging an official document, stalking the woman and insulting her in public. At the court, the accused denied the charges,

stressing that the woman was his wife and he never insulted her.

His lawyer argued that the marriage certificate the man presented was issued by the Shariah Court in Abu Dhabi and that there was a copy of it in the department’s records.

She also noted that the official who issued the certificate confirmed that he had seen the original identification documents of the couple, in addition to the bride’s father.

But the woman refuted the claims, stressing that her father died in 2008 and that there was no way he could have signed their marriage certificate in 2010. She also presented her father’s death certificate to the court to confirm that the said marriage certificate on which he allegedly signed was issued after his death.

A criminal laboratory report said the signatures of the defendant and the plaintiff which are on the marriage certificate were forged. The trial was adjourned to March 15.
