5,000 workers roped in to clean up Dubai

dubai — About 5,000 workers from the Dubai Municipali­ty cleaned up 265 locations after the heavy rains on Sunday, the civic body announced on Monday, adding that the team responded to 22 complaints of water logging.

Talib Julfar, assistant directorge­neral of the Dubai Municipali­ty for Environmen­t and Public Health Services Sector, said that the Dubai team succeeded in facilitati­ng the traffic movement on Dubai streets by draining out the rainwater through the drainage network, and sucking out the water from the streets that are not covered by the network.

The assistant director-general added that the team of 5,000 workers from different municipali­ty department­s arranged 48 tanks for the areas not served by the network, including 35 tanks in Dubai city.

He added that the team was prepared for emergency situations based on the meteorolog­ical reports and rain forecast.

“An emergency plan was prepared quickly and suction pumps were distribute­d in Jumeirah, Al Quoz Industrial area, Muhaisnah and Al Aweer so as to remove water from the streets.

“Also some 95 suction pumps were distribute­d to drain the water faster,” said Julfar.

The official explained that the team had divided Dubai into 10 areas and the worked under an emergency mode round the clock until the water was completely drained from the streets and waste was cleared.
