Cabbies jailed for impersonat­ion

abu dhabi — A taxi driver who lent his cab and driving licence to another driver to work for him was sentenced to three months in jail, along with the second driver, followed by deportatio­n.

The first cabbie gave the vehicle and in order to avoid missing out on his daily targets. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance on Tuesday handed down the jail sentence to the Ugandan man and his compatriot friend. The court was earlier told that the second cabbie’s whose car had been taken away from him by the company because of some work-related violations. Using another person’s driving licence to drive a car and exchanging cars for cabbies without the permission of their company is not allowed, according to the law.

Prosecutor­s had charged the first cabbie, with negligence while the second driver was charged with impersonat­ion because he presented his colleague’s driving licence to the policemen.

Court documents stated that the Traffic Police caught the impersonat­ing driver in the Khalidiya area in December last year. The police were called by some people when the cab allegedly blocked traffic on a side road. When the policemen asked for his driving licence, the driver presented the one that belonged to the owner of the cab. The police arrested the man after noticing that the licence he presented wasn’t his.
