Know about cancers to prevent them

dubai — A wellness camp was organised for Khaleej Times employees as part of its activities to mark the International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8 every year.

Thumbay Hospital organised the event to raise awareness on breast and cervical cancers and its prevention measures at the Khaleej Times main office on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lakshmi Archana Kumar, specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, said that women should remember that breast and cervical cancers “are the most common” and that they are, at the same time, “highly preventable, very well treatable diseases”.

“Unless you’re aware of the problems, you will not be able to treat them,” she said.

Cervical cancer is caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) and it occurs when cells on cervix, the lower part of uterus, grows abnormally. Anyone who has had sex is at risk of HPV, however, chances are high for women having multiple partners, being younger than 25 and having sex at an early age.

The cancer can be caused by a number of other factors.

“Things like smoking, uncontrolled anxiety, HIV or Aids, or birth control pills that are used for a long duration,” she said. “You need not be scared of using birth control pills…but if they are used for a long duration they may result in promoting cervical cancer. Having multiple sexual partners is the most important factor for cancer cervix.”

The symptoms of cervical cancer, Dr Kumar explained, include vaginal bleeding, pain in the lower belly or during sex, and abnormal vaginal discharges.

In the case of breast cancer, Dr Kumar said that self-examination and early detection could lead to fewer fatalities. Risk factors include getting older, family history and genetics, having children after 30, alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise, among other factors.

The event also included a talk by Dr Sadia Javed, general dentist, who explained common oral problems.
