7 new parks open in UAE
— The Ajman and Sharjah municipalities, as part of the 37th afforestation week, expanded the green areas and opened two parks in the two emirates. The Plantation Week is being organised nationwide under the slogan “Let’s plant a greener emirates together”.
The opening of the new parks — Al Nakhilat and Al Jurainah parks — follows the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who is keen on expanding the green areas in the emirate.
Hassan Al Taffaq, director of environment and plantation department at the Sharjah Municipality, said that Al Nakhilat park covers an area of 9,744 square metre, while Al Jurainah park spans an area of 16,419 square metre. With the addition of the parks, the number of parks in Sharjah has gone up to 61 (distributed among residential areas).
Apart from lawn, trees, benches and walking area, the parks also have sports courts (like tennis, basket-ball) as well as other kinds of entertainment activities for children.
The Plantation Week is being celebrated nationwide to fight desertification by expanding the green area and encouraging residents to establish small gardens in their houses and villas.
In order to make people aware of the importance of plantating trees, the municipality is organising several activities to celebrate the week, said Hanan Jassim, head of the parks section at the Sharjah Municipality. The activities include competitions, art workshop, distribution of plant and flower among children, music and folk dance.
“Beautifying areas, making them more scenic by adding greener areas will revive the spirit and feeling of happiness among the residents and visitors of the parks,” she said.
In Ajman, Abdul Rahman Al Nuaimi, Director-General of the Ajan Municipality, on Wednesday opened three green squares in vital areas in the emirate, including Al Rawdah in 1,370 sqm, Al Muwihat 2 covering an area of 1,827 sqm, and Al Hummaidia in an area of 1,508sqm.
