‘Terrorism can never be fought in isolation’
abu dhabi -— No country can fight the growing threat of global terrorism in isolation, Jürgen Stock, secretary-general of Interpol, said on Monday.
In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times on the sidelines of Unity for Security conference, the Interpol top boss spoke about the importance of ‘Turning security information into ground action.’
“I think we currently see an unprecedented level of threats, with regard to international terrorism, with organised crime groups taking benefits from a more and more inter-connective world.”
He explained that the threat from global terrorism is more complex than ever. “Transnational terrorist organisations are technologically savvy, active on social media and have sophisticated operating and funding models. The fight against terrorism demands a comprehensive and coordinated response,” said Stock.
He pointed out that the Unity for Security Forum will thus help countries come up with strategies that can fight crime and dismantle terrorist organisations.
“The UAE is supporting seven of our major programmes, including addressing terrorism, vulnerable communities, fighting the drug phenomena, vehicle crime and protecting cultural heritage.”
He noted that Interpol is the world’s largest international police organisation with a network of 190 member countries, and drawing on a range of policing capabilities, including databases, response teams, training and forensics.
