Hubby sent to jail for beating wife over kid sleeping on their bed

- Ismail Sebugwaawo

abu dhabi — A man who beat up his wife after he found their child sleeping in their bed has been sentenced to three months in jail. The Abu Dhabi Cassation Court on Thursday upheld the ruling by lower courts after the Egyptian man was found guilty of assaulting his wife and insulting her.

Official court documents stated that the Egyptian woman had complained to authorities after her husband attacked her at their home in Abu Dhabi last year.

The couple allegedly had some misunderstandings which resulted from the man “not taking care of the woman’s financial needs”. The woman got a job and started working so she could take care of herself and stop relying on her husband.

This, however, didn’t go down well with the man, who “always quarrelled” with her over small things whenever he returned home from work.

And on the day of the attack, the husband returned home late at night and found the woman sleeping in their bed with their son next to her.

The man allegedly asked the boy to go back to his room and sleep there, but the child refused and insisted on sleeping with his parents.

“When I asked my husband to leave the child alone as he wanted to sleep with us that night because he wasn’t feeling well, he beat me up and also insulted me,” the woman said in court. “He punched and kicked me.”

The injuries allegedly prevented the woman from working for more than 20 days.

A medical report said the woman sustained bruises to her face, knees, back and on the right forearm. She also suffered from abdominal pains resulting from the beatings.

The Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance had earlier given the man three months in jail and fined him Dh2,000 for assaulting his wife and insulting her. The man challenged the ruling at the Appeal Court which upheld the ruling.

The Egyptian then appealed at the Abu Dhabi top court, which rejected his appeal. The court also advised the wife to lodge a compensation lawsuit against her husband in the civil court.
