- Ahmed Shaaban

dubai — The Dar Al Ber Society (Dabs) has contributed Dh500,000 for the ‘For your sake, Somalia’ campaign. The drive is meant to collect as much contributions as possible for the famine-hit Somali people in pursuance of the directives of the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The move is aimed to secure an emergency aid for the Somali people. Khalfan Khalifa Al Mazrouie, Chairman, Dabs, said the society had earlier launched an emergency relief campaign for Somalis.

“A special delegation from the Dabs was dispatched from its headquarters in Dubai to the brotherly country in a humanitarian mission to directly manage and closely run the campaign.”

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, executive director of Dabs, said the initiative is meant to show compassion and solidarity to the Somali people. “The Dabs has already launched an emergency relief campaign of Dh2.8 million for the benefit of the Somali people hit by a massive famine and drought that reportedly killed many people and domestic animals.”

The relief campaign is targeting the three areas in the northern region of Somalia, he added. “These are apart from three other areas in the eastern region, and two more in the southern region.”

Al Falasi said the multi-phase campaign will secure a variety of foodstuff in two big containers to the African country. “Initially, Dh2.8 million has been allotted for the relief campaign to buy food packages including rice, sugar, flour, dates, cooking oil, milk, and biscuits for the faminehit Somali people.”

Imran Mohammed Abdullah, head of charity projects sector at the Dabs — who chaired the delegation to Somalia — said they have allotted Dh570,000 for Al Ber Hospital in Mogadishu. “These will help provide the needed medicines fluids, and special foods for patients and drought victims.”

The Dabs has run an array of charity projects in Somalia. “These span building mosques, digging water wells, sponsoring orphans, students and Quran teachers.”

The society has also supported low-income families in collaboration with a number of accredited charity entities, Abdullah elaborated. “Dar Al Ber had earlier spent millions of dirhams for the Yemeni refugees in Somalia.” ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
