Surgery saves heavy smoker’s life after severe lung bleeding

RAS AL KHAIMAH — An Emirati heavy smoker was lucky enough to be shifted to the operation theatre of the Saqr Hospital in time for an urgent surgery after suffering a severe lung bleeding.

The man, in his 30s, was first admitted to the Khor Fakkan Hospital, and then shifted to the Saqr Hospital for an urgent operation, according to Dr Mahmoud Yahya, chest specialist surgeon.

“The surgeons managed to control the excessive lung bleeding after a three-hour-long surgery on Tuesday.”

The youth was suffering from severe chest pain, respirator­y problems and difficulty in breathing, when he was first admitted to the Khor Fakkan Hospital, he added.

“The excessive bleeding was blamed on heavy smoking,” Dr Yahya said. “We could not first control the bleeding though we took all the medical procedures required in such cases.”

lost three litres of his blood. “We could not help making an incision into the patient’s chest to stop the excessive lung bleeding during which six units of blood were transferre­d to him.” The medical team included Dr Saeed Hassan, a specialist surgeon with the Saqr Hospital, and Dr Esam M., an anaesthesi­a and intensive care consultant, along with a number of specialist­s and nurses.

Mohammed Rashid bin Arsheed, manager of Saqr Hospital, said that the specialty sections in the hospital has efficientl­y received and treated many complicate­d cases that were referred from other hospitals.
