DM allays fears over Sadia chicken

dubai — Sadia chicken products are back on shelves in Dubai after being removed from Union Coop stores for a day. There were rumours and confusion on Saturday whether the brand was safe to buy from Dubai supermarkets. However, the chicken was removed only from Union Coop stores. The Dubai Municipality said the withdrawal of the product was an “internal procedure” by the supermarket.

A statement issued by Sadia said: “Sadia is pleased to confirm its products are back on sale at Union Coop stores. An initial investigation with the retailer and the food safety department of Dubai revealed that Sadia’s products continue to meet the highest quality standards and that there was no cause for the retailer to withdraw products voluntarily from its stores.

“Sadia remains committed to the quality of products delivered through a correctly maintained cold chain integrity as well as working with the relevant food safety authorities to protect and reassure consumers in line with UAE’s strict food control standards.”

When Khaleej Times visited a Union Coop store in Barsha, staff were seen moving the chicken from one freezer to another.

A staff member said that the store was facing technical issues with the some of the freezers.

Confusion prevailed among residents of Sharjah, too, as rumours that Sadia chicken had been removed from UAE stores began doing the rounds. An official at the Sharjah Municipality, however, rubbished the rumours. He said food products including all type of meats currently available in the market are safe for consumption.

One concerned customer, Riku, said: “We’ve been buying Sadia chicken for a long time. It’s one of the oldest brands in the UAE. I hope there’s nothing wrong with it.”
