Abu Dhabi Police to cancel black points for minor traffic offences

- Ismail Sebugwaawo

abu dhabi — The Abu Dhabi Police have launched a new drive to cancel black points registered against motorists in minor traffic offences before the implementation of new penalties and rules. The new ministerial decision on the rules and procedures of traffic control and new traffic violations and fines are set to be implemented by July 1.

Police officials said on Sunday that all black points in minor traffic violations registered against drivers on Abu Dhabi roads before July 1 will be cancelled, except for major traffic offences like reckless driving, jumping red lights, driving at excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and others.

Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, director-general of central operations at Abu Dhabi Police, said: “The initiative to cancel black points will benefit all drivers who have committed minor traffic offences in Abu Dhabi.”

A part of Abu Dhabi Police’s initiatives for ‘The Year of Giving’, the move is intended to give drivers a chance to “clean up their acts and start abiding by traffic rules and regulations”. Al Dhaheri said the initiative will motivate violators to change their behaviour and learn how to comply with laws and regulations to enhance the force’s efforts to make Abu Dhabi roads safer.

He called on all drivers to make use of the new initiative and avoid licences from being withdrawn in case of exceeding the maximum 24 black points.
