GMU academic hospital to be ready in 2018

ajman — Stakeholde­rs of the Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, on Saturday discussed strategic plans for the future of the university and to realise the vision of its founder-president Thumbay Moideen, who wanted to make the university one of the best universiti­es in health education and research.

Addressing a gathering at the university campus on Saturday, Prof Hossam Hamdy, chancellor of GMU, said: “In the next few years, we intend to take the GMU to another level. We have already developed three institutes for world class research and training within the GMU — Thumbay Institute of Precision Medicine and Translatio­nal Research (TIPM&TR), Thumbay Institute of Population Health and Thumbay Institute of Healthcare Workforce Developmen­t and Leadership. The 350-bed academic hospital, the 60-chair dental hospital as well as the advanced rehabilita­tion centre inside the GMU campus are expected to be completed next year.”

The meeting had representa­tives of internal and external stakeholde­rs including officials from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Higher Education, educationi­sts, healthcare profession­als, faculty members, parents and student representa­tives. The event was graced by the presence of Dr Haidar Al Yousuf, director of health funding, Dubai Health Authority.

Presenting the vision statement of GMU, Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, provost of the GMU, described the university as “a network of academic health centres with intramural centres of excellence.” The members later toured the university, experienci­ng its world class teaching and learning facilities, the innovation and research centre, the advanced research facilities, simulated training centre, etc. They also reviewed and discussed the present vision and mission of the colleges of GMU, and proposed recommenda­tions.

Dr Haidar Al Yousuf said that building sustainabl­e health systems was one of the greatest challenges for present day healthcare institutio­ns. “Sustainabi­lity in daily practices must be a priority area for healthcare profession­als.”
