Once a killer, now a victim

- Amira Agarib

dubai — It was a sheer repetition of tragedy when a man was killed in a run-over accident on Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road recently.

The Asian, who died in the accident, had run over another man 10 years ago, Khaleej Times has learned.

A source at the Dubai Police said that the Asian died around 10pm after he stopped his car on the side of the road following an accident. While he was trying to cross the road in order to repair his car, a car ran over him — as it happened to the other victim 10 years ago — and he succumbed to his injuries.

Ironically, both men crossed the road from a non-designated area, which claimed their lives.

The source stressed that trying to cross five- or six-lane roads with a speed exceeding 120kmph is a suicidal act, as pedestrians cannot cross such roads safely.

He pointed out that though a lack of awareness among pedestrians, especially workers, leads to the occurrence of such tragic

incidents, the motorist always bears the responsibility as they have to draw attention to other road users. The department of traffic prosecution is investigating the run-over incident and so far no charges have been brought against the driver.

According to the source, the responsibility of the accident has to be shared between the driver and the pedestrian in such cases. The investigation focuses on factors like the time of the accident, nature of the road, weather as well as witness testimonies and reports from experts.
