UAQ sets up 27 Ramadan tents to distribute Iftars

- Ahmed Shaaban

umm al quwain — With few days left for the holy month of Ramadan, philanthropists and different public and private entities in Umm Al Quwain have joined hands to instal 27 tents for providing free Iftar meals to blue-collar workers and indigent people.

One of the most common nationwide tradition, these tents are designated to provide relief to the poor and needy during the holy month of Ramadan.

Wafaa Saqr, an Egyptian teacher, told Khaleej Times that there is a Ramadan tent usually installed close to her school at the Salma area. “It is inspiring to see the huge number of people enjoying such mass Iftar banquets.” Wherever one goes, they will be able to find a Ramadan tent where people are happily gathering, she added. “Also, it is so easy to support such mass Iftars by simply sending an SMS to the charity society concerned.”

The civil defence department has, meanwhile, started inspecting all the 27 Ramadan tents installed to ensure public safety.

“We have to make sure that all the power supplies are properly covered and secured to avoid any risks,” said Col Khamis Ibrahim, acting director of the UAQ civil defence department. “The anti-fire cloth used in the tents, the entries, exits, air flow, ventilation system, and all safety precautionary measured are checked as fires have been reported earlier for failure to observe set rules.”

The department is geared up to ensure public safety at all the facilities, mainly Ramadan tents during the holy month, he said. “We are extra alert as many diverse activities will be held during the holy month.”

The department staff inspectors have distributed thousands of brochures to enlighten people and organisers about safety measures at Ramadan tents. “More inspection campaigns will be launched to secure public safety.”
