Students honoured for green efforts in Sharjah
sharjah — Students from various Sharjah schools were honoured for their environmental efforts, including waste reduction and recycling.
Bee’ah held the 7th annual Sharjah Environment Awareness Award (SEAA) ceremony, commemorating the innovative environmental projects of students from kindergarten to grade 12. The gala also announced the winners of the 4th edition of the InterSchool Recycling Competition.
Winning students were rewarded for their innovative projects, which addressed this year’s theme: ‘Climate Change caused by Air Pollution’.
The award was inspired by the vision of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to improve environmental responsibility in all segments of the community, especially within schools. The initiative is an ongoing competition in which participating schools actively involve their students in a range of creative environmental projects.
Khaled Al Huraimel, group CEO of Bee’ah, stated: “Today, I am proud that Bee’ah’s efforts to promote environmental responsibility and reduce the harmful effects of waste generation have been met by the phenomenal dedication, innovation and enthusiasm of students and teachers. This year, we received over 250 submissions from schools across the emirate; that is over 10 times the submissions from the first edition of the SEAA.”
A total of 11 awards spanning four categories were presented at this year’s edition. The cash prizes for Grade 7 to 12 winners ranged from Dh10,000 to Dh25,000, with individual awards going up to Dh15,000.
This year’s event also marks the fourth year that Bee’ah orchestrated an Inter-School Recycling Competition (ISRC), a concept that saw 107 schools compete in three categories. Delhi Private School won first prize in the ‘Large Schools’ category by collecting 30 tonnes of recyclable material. Fatima Al Zahra School came first in the ‘Medium Schools’ category with a collection of 17 tonnes while Al Sahwa School won first place in the ‘Small Schools’ category, accumulating 11 tonnes of recyclables.
