RAK decked up to welcome Ramadan

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — Following the Emirati traditions and culture, Ras Al Khaimah has lit up its key areas to welcome the holy month of Ramadan.

This is part of the UAE heritage and tradition, which people follow every year to mark the holy season of fasting and display their readiness for worship.

Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al Hammadi, director of the department of public works and services, said the residents of each district used to do these lighting works and decorations in the past.

“We normally start installing these decorations in the middle of the lunar month of Shaaban, with plans to complete the due lighting and decorations by the first day of Ramadan.”

This year, the department chose some new companies to diversify the decorations on the roundabouts and main roads, he added. “New colours and shapes have been chosen this year to reflect the spirit of the month.”

Eng. Al Hammadi said more lights and decorations have been installed on the palm trees. “Most of these were put up at the tourist sites, including the Corniche Al Qawasim and the Old Corniche.”

Abdullah Rashid, an Emirati resident of Al Rams area, told Khaleej Times that he and all his entire family members decorate their house with colourful lights and decorations every Ramadan.

“We have earned this tradition from our forefathers. Everyone feels like sharing the moment and marking the auspicious occasion.”

His 10-year-old son Ammar Abdullah said he always helps his father put the lights and decorations all over their house during Ramadan. “My brothers and sisters take the chance and get ready for the holy month of Ramadan.” ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
