Warehouses, factories gutted in 3 major fires
sharjah/ajman — Three massive fires, which broke out in Ajman and Sharjah during the Eid Al Fitr holidays, have destroyed 12 warehouses and two factories. However, no casualties were reported from both emirates.
On Monday night, 12 warehouses and a plastic factory were gutted in Sharjah, while a huge fire destroyed a furniture factory in Ajman.
Of the three fires on Monday night, two were reported from Sharjah. One fire erupted in a plastic factory located in Al Hamriyah Port and the another in the Industrial Area 13 near National Paints on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, which destroyed the 12 warehouses.
Col. Sami Al Naqbi, directorgeneral of Sharjah Civil Defence, said that the fire fighters from various fire stations joined the rescue operation and to control the inferno in a short time.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brig. Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, deputy director of Ajman Civil Defence, said that fire fighters from Al Jarf and Al Rumaila fire stations, and Umm Al Quwain, contained the blaze at the furniture factory at Al Jarf Industrial Area, and prevented it from spreading to nearby warehouses and factories.
The site will soon be handed over to the police and forensic experts to determine the cause of the fire.
According to officials, poor fire safety measures and storing inflammable materials without adequate precautions have led to the fire incidents.
The civil defence authorities in both the emirates urged owners of workshops, factories and warehouses to follow the fire protection regulations to avoid loss of lives and properties.
They will also intensify inspections of warehouses to ensure whether the companies are following fire safety rules. The authorities warned errant companies will face tough fines for violations.
