2 killed, 33 hurt in bike accidents in 6 months

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — Two people were killed and 33 others sustained injuries in motorbike accidents in the first half of the year on the roads of Ras Al Khaimah.

Brigadier Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Humaidi, director-general of the central operations room of the RAK Police, said 33 bicycle and motorbike accidents were registered in the emirate in six months.

“Two young people were killed and 33 received injuries. However, none of the injuries were serious. Speeding and failing to obey traffic and safety regulations were blamed for the accidents registered.”

Parents are also to be blamed for letting their children ride motorbikes without having licences, he underlined. “The motorbikes they ride also do not comply with the standards.”

The RAK Police have carried out several campaigns to raise public awareness about the hazards involved in riding unsafe bicycles and motorbikes, particularly on public roads, Brig Humaidi pointed out.

“Most teenagers perform bike stunts in residential areas, posing grave risk to the lives of other roads users and theirs.”

The police have intensified inspection campaigns on all the roads of the emirate to reduce traffic accidents and casualties, he said.

“The number of the bicycle and motorbike accidents registered in the first half of the year is significantly lower than those recorded over the same period last year,” he said. “A 60 per cent drop in such accidents has been reported.”

Recently, the RAK Police impounded 24 motorbikes for traffic violations.

Many of the motorbikes seized were ridden by workers with outlets here, he disclosed. “They didn’t have licences and the vehicles were not even registered.”

Col Ali Saeed Al Alkeem, director of traffic and patrols department with the RAK Police, said the motorbikes seized were speeding through city streets and rocketing along thoroughfares, leaving behind deafening decibels — mostly at night. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
