Indian returns home after 2 years in coma

- Ashwani Kumar

abu dhabi — An Indian, who had been lying in coma for more than two years at an Abu Dhabi hospital following a road accident, was finally repatriated to his native place on Tuesday. The move came following a sustained effort from the Indian Embassy and the patient’s relatives to help Chithiravel Udaiyar return after a longfought compensation case. He was awarded an insurance amount of Dh1.09 million.

Udaiyar came to the UAE in 2014 and had been working as a wiring electrician assistant till June 2015, when the car he was travelling in hit something and overturned. According to Udaiyar’s brother V Uthira Moorthy, Udaiyar was admitted to the hospital with severe injuries. Khaleej Times had reported about Udaiyar’s plight in October 26, 2016.

The employer of Udaiyar, Smart Energy Power Contracting, supported him throughout the crisis by paying salaries. It was, however, the insurance amount, which was a long-standing issue and the embassy officials played a key role in getting the compensation.

“We took up the matter with local authorities for his early repatriation and better treatment in India,” embassy first secretary for community affairs Dinesh Kumar said.

“The employer had filed a case against the insurance company. Finally, the company had to pay a compensation of Dh1.09 million to Udaiyar. He already reached Tamil Nadu and has been admitted to Neuro Foundation Hospital in Salem,” Kumar said.

Udaiyar’s wife Parameswari and his four-year-old daughter are all relieved to have him back under their care. Parameswari thanked the company, embassy, hospital and social welfare groups for helping their family in distress.
