dubai — A businessman has gone on trial in the Court of First Instance for verbally abusing a police officer who was on patrol duty.

The defendant, a 26-year-old from Egypt, has been charged with assaulting an on-duty police officer.

“I was on patrol duty when I learned about a problem in Hor Al Anz. The man who called the police said the accused assaulted him and his colleague. He showed the injury on his fingers,” the policeman said.

“Soon, we received another complaint from a woman saying that a Pakistani man was harassing and stalking her. She claimed it was the same man who earlier reported the assault incident. “She led us to her place to get her ID. We were surprised to see a man (the accused) there though it was a women’s accommodation.”

That man told the police it was his place and the women stayed there as they worked for him.

“When I asked him about his ID and tenancy contract and whether he had a permit to let women stay in his place, he said many companies have that practice in place.” the policeman told the prosecutor.

The defendant then talked with someone on the phone in the presence of the officer about him in a disrespectful way. “He would also not go in the police car saying that he would later order a special one from the command.”

When the accused went to the police station, he apologised to the policeman but the latter did not accept it as he had insulted him while he was in the uniform and in public.
