Hundreds of staff ready to keep Capital clean

- Staff Reporter

abu dhabi — While Eid Al Adha is around the corner, there is one set of people who ensure the Capital remains in its cleanest form during and after the festivities.

Come Eid, the Waste Management Centre — Abu Dhabi or Tadweer has set up an intensive work plan with hundreds of cleaners covering mosques, public places, roads, markets and slaughterhouses.

Cleaning staff will work on the main and secondary roads starting before the holiday and until it officially ends.

Specialised teams will clean up the Eid prayer areas and oversee the removal of sand from roads leading up to mosques. Parking areas at mosques will be regularly cleaned. Eid prayer mosques will be given a priority and a dedicated team of over 30 workers assigned to serve the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

As markets and parks become crowded during Eid, more workers have been assigned to public market areas. They will collect waste, clean the area and move waste containers twice a day to avoid accumulation. To cover all of Abu Dhabi, over 600 cleaners will be assigned in two shifts.

In parallel, Tadweer also intends to distribute bags to Corniche visitors to encourage them to collect waste and dispose of it in its designated containers.

Tadweer acting general manager Saeed Al Mehairbi said the centre will do all it can to maintain a healthy local environment. “Eid Al Adha entails a sacrifice ritual and we will provide all forms of assistance to ensure that our ritual practices do not affect environmental security and safety, locally or globally,” Mehairbi said.

Tadweer’s plan for Eid includes an intensive, multi-levelled work system covering different gathering areas, slaughter areas and other celebration spots, to prevent waste accumulation and reduce its harmful environmental effects. Additional collection vehicles will prevent accumulated waste or overflowing trash containers, through a scheduled waste collection plan throughout Abu Dhabi.

As slaughterhouses see 30 per cent more waste during Eid, additional containers with a capacity of 15 to 30 cubic meters will be provided to slaughterhouses.

Tadweer’s role in such events is not limited to waste collection and transfer, but also in public awareness messages on proper waste disposal and importance of waste recycling. It also reinforces an anti-food wastage policy and public health preservation. During last Eid, Tadweer collected 2,746 tonnes of waste per day.
