abu dhabi — An Abu Dhabi resident stood trial at a court, accused of stabbing a worker to death using a kitchen knife after the victim and two other men allegedly tried to abduct his son from his home.

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance heard that the Asian men went to the defendant’s house in Abu Dhabi and attacked the father and his son after an argument.

The men, who had some differences with the defendant over unknown issues, also tried to take the man’s son hostage, which resulted into a fight between the two groups. The men, who had come with knives, allegedly attacked the father as he tried to stop them from abducting his son.

The defendant then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed the victim several times in the stomach

and other body parts which caused the man’s death. The man also attacked the other two men as they tried to take away his son but they only sustained wounds.

Residents in the neighbouring apartments, who heard the men quarrelling and fighting inside the house, informed the police. By the time the police reached the spot, the worker had already bled to death.

The police arrested the accused and prosecutors charged him with murdering the worker and assaulting his two colleagues.

The man denied the charge of murder, stressing that he attacked the men in self-defence. “They came to my house with knives and attacked me and my son,” he told the court.

“I attacked them in self-defence as the men came to my house and beat me up, but I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. The men also attacked me with knives and wanted to abduct my son to take him as a hostage.”

The man said he fought the trio back in fighting for his life and that of his child. His lawyer argued that the man attacked the victims in legitimate self-defence. “The three men went to my client’s house with the intention of killing him. There is evidence that the men were carrying knives with them which they tried to use to assault him so they could abduct his son.”

The lawyer argued that his client should be cleared of the murder charge because he is innocent. The trial was adjourned until October.
