dubai — A Dubai-based company broke the Guinness World Records for the largest and fastest continuous concrete pouring of a construction project.

The continuous concrete pouring of 21,580 cubic metres (m3) in Jebel Ali took 35 hours and 19 minutes, breaking the previous record achieved by Sharjah’s Safari Mall construction in May that covered 20,246m3 of concrete in 62 hours.

Around 12 engineers and 500 workers per shift took part at the staff accommodation site under consultant Alfa Engineering and RALS Contracting for the plot owner AbdulWahed Ahmed Rashed Bin Shabib Group. The pouring took four shifts of continuous work to be finished within the record time.

Nabeel Korbaj, representative of the group, said around 2,800 concrete trucks were involved in the work that started at 7.21pm on May 19 and ended at 6.40am on May 21.

“I received the project, and when I learned that the distance involved is over 20,000m3, I thought it as an opportunity that will allow us to break a record,” said Korbaj, who also managed the project. He said the thickness of the concrete base was over 105cm in the project that involved 2,700 tonnes of steel. In cooperation with different government entities including the Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Police, Korbaj said some of the roads were closed for the work to be completed on the site.

Korbaj said the biggest challenge was putting up a strategic plan. “We needed to clear the roads, provide health and food services for over 2,000 people involved since the work was continuous and we didn’t stop for a minute,” said Korbaj. The overall project is expected to be complete in 18 months.

The announcement was made by a Guinness World Records representative who handed over the Guinness certificate on Sunday morning. The ceremony was attended by Hussain Lootah, director-general of the Dubai Municipality, and other officials and representatives of the partners and companies.
